NEW YORK, Sept. 20, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- An emerging type of minimally-invasive spine surgery reduces the use of pain medication in patients' recovery compared to those who undergo other less minimally-invasive spine surgery, which use larger incisions resulting in more post-operative pain, according to a study published in World Neurosurgery in September.

This retrospective study in 102 patients found that endoscopic spine surgery reduced the use of opioids by 21 percent right after surgery compared to other less minimally invasive lower back surgery. Moreover, the use of non-opioid pain medication was also reduced by 24 percent. This ultra-minimally-invasive surgery, called unilateral biportal endoscopic discectomy, is an endoscopic technique that requires only two small incisions for a camera and surgical tools to repair herniated discs in the lower back.

"This breakthrough technique is a game changer because it gives patients a better recovery with less pain and less need for narcotics and their related side-effects," said Charla Fischer, co-director of the Endoscopic Spine Surgery Program at NYU Langone Orthopedics and lead author on the study. "This is a highly-specialized area, and we are leading in the number of cases performed because we've seen the benefit this brings to our patients and their recovery."

While endoscopic spine surgery has shown early potential, until this study there was a lack of understanding how it compares in the use of pain medication to other minimally-invasive techniques. In the background of the opioid crisis, focused efforts to reduce opioid use after surgery continue, and these initial findings are promising in reducing patients' pain and need for narcotics. Future studies with larger sample sizes and prospective designs could further inform the long-term outcomes of endoscopic spine surgery compared to other minimally invasive spine surgical procedures.

Voluntary partnerships and collaborative oversight address complex environmental issues

Each year for the past decade, the Protecting Blue Whales & Blue Skies program has incentivized increasing numbers of eligible shipping lines to voluntarily adjust shipping schedules to transit at 10 knots in key areas during times of peak whale presence and periods of high ground-level ozone (smog) concentrations.

Mid-Season Report
Twice a year, at the mid-year mark in September and end-of-season mark in December, data from enrolled shipping companies are evaluated, based on the percent of distance traveled by their vessels through the Voluntary Speed Reduction “VSR” zones at whale-safer speeds (10 knots or less).

The Issue Ship traffic poses significant collision risk to whales. Off the West Coast alone - a major entry point for international goods to the United States - an estimated 80 whales a year are struck and killed by ships. The volume of commercial shipping has grown over the past decades to the point that ship noise now makes a larger contribution to ocean noise than natural sound sources for many ocean locations, and dominates the ocean soundscape.

Jess Morten, California Marine Sanctuary Foundation’s Director of Marine Resource Protection, who has helped administer the program for the last eight years, reflects on the mid-year results, efforts to bring more shipping lines on board, and the program’s potential for sustained conservation impact.

“If you look at the progress of Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies, it’s really encouraging to see steady growth in the number of global shipping lines enrolling in the program, and the continuing cooperation of those shipping lines,” she said.

In terms of understanding the overall impact, Tim Mitro, Air Quality Engineer with the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District, ran the numbers at the close of the 2023 season to get a sense of the scale of Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies’ efforts relative to all transits from eligible vessels (container, auto carrier, bulk, and tanker vessel operators).

“Looking at the total nautical miles from all ships transiting through the VSR zones, the participants in the program currently represent 89% of the container and auto carrier traffic,” he said. “As for the bulk and tanker vessels, the program recently expanded into these ship sectors and so the capture rate is only at 17%. More companies continue to sign up every season as they become aware of the program and the expansion in eligibility.”

Documented performance To date, performance of enrolled participants halfway through the 2024 season includes: 37 shipping lines enrolled; the largest number in the program’s history. 14 of the 37 shipping lines are currently achieving the Sapphire award level (85-100% fleet total distance in VSR zones traveled at 10 knots or less). 11 of the 37 shipping lines are achieving the Gold award level. Vessels of the enrolled companies have traveled over 220,000 nautical miles in the zones, with 82% of that distance traveled at 10 knots or less.

The 14 shipping lines currently tracking in the top “Sapphire” tier include CMA CGM, COSCO Shipping, CSL, Dockendale, HMC Ship Management, Marathon Petroleum, MSC, NYK Ro-Ro, ONE Line, OOCL, OSG, Starbulk S.A., Swire Shipping, and Yang Ming.

How the Program Monitors Shipping Activity to Verify Results: Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a coastal tracking and navigation safety system used on vessels that provides identification and positioning information, yielding information on each ship’s speed and location. The program synthesizes this AIS data from each ships’ transponder, analyzing information for each fleet to verify performance down to the ship level on specific transits. Supported by program partner Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory, Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies provides monthly reports to each shipping line, which yields increased visibility on performance and time to improve overall cooperation, as well as a breakdown of detected whale activity.

About the Program Ship strikes are a major threat to whales globally, and specifically in California waters. They threaten the recovery of endangered blue, fin, and humpback whales. The 10-knot target complements NOAA, U.S. Coast Guard, and Environmental Protection Agency voluntary requests for all vessels 300 GT or larger to reduce speeds during the months of peak air pollution and endangered blue, humpback, and fin whale abundance to protect them from ship strikes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the second leading cause of death for people ages 20–34 years and the eleventh leading cause of death overall. Alarmingly, suicide rates are even higher among pharmacists compared to the general population.

"Too many lives have been impacted by the tragedy of suicide, including among pharmacists and other healthcare professionals," said ASHP CEO Paul W. Abramowitz, PharmD, ScD (Hon), FASHP. "ASHP is pleased to partner with APhA and other organizations on Pharmacy Workforce Suicide Awareness Day to help raise awareness, recognize the risks of occupational burnout and moral injury, and promote strategies to help safeguard the mental health and well-being of our colleagues."

Since the introduction of Pharmacy Workforce Suicide Awareness Day last year, 23 organizations have joined APhA and ASHP in recognizing the importance of supporting pharmacists, pharmacy residents, student pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians by raising awareness, providing resources to prevent suicide and manage mental health conditions, and encouraging a culture of well-being.

TEMPE, Ariz., Sept. 12, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- With ongoing global unrest and a major U.S. election on the horizon, economic analysts continue to debate whether the U.S. economy will continue its path to a soft landing. Stephen Stanley, chief U.S. economist at Santander US Capital Markets, LLC (SanCap), who is being presented with the Lawrence R. Klein Award by the W. P. Carey School of Business, predicts that after a period of below trend growth late this year and early next year, the U.S. economy should skirt a recession and return to solid growth later in 2025, as Federal Reserve rate cuts should help to boost consumer and business demand.

Stanley will deliver his 2025 economic outlook, including predictions for growth and monetary policy, at a live event on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the University Club of New York. At the event, Stanley will be honored with the Lawrence R. Klein Award for Blue Chip Forecast Accuracy for 2024, one of the best-known and longest-standing achievements in economic forecasting. A livestream of the forecast and award ceremony will also be available; it is free for the public to view.

A national survey of 1,000 homeschooling parents highlights strong support for educational freedom programs, including education savings accounts (ESAs) and tax credits. The survey reflects a growing trend of homeschool families advocating for more control over their children's education.

Why This Matters:
As homeschooling expands, this community supports policies that enhance educational choice, including ESAs and tax credits. They also recognize the value of diverse learning environments, with nine in ten homeschool parents indicating homeschool and private school children should be able to attend public schools on a course-by-course basis. The vast majority (80%) believe this access would improve their state's K-12 education system.

The poll was conducted from Aug. 29–Sept. 2, 2024. It surveyed 1,000 K-12 homeschool parents nationwide with a margin of error of ± 3.4%.

SANTA BARBARA, CA, UNITED STATES, September 25, 2024 /EINPresswire.com/ -- “(Full-length mid-urethral slings) are associated with significant complications, including bladder perforation and vessel injuries with RMUS (retropubic slings), and postoperative groin and thigh pain with TMUS (transobturator slings). To minimize these complications, a new generation of slings emerged: single incision slings (SIS),” states Dr. Le Mai Tu, Neurourol Urodyn. 2023; 42: 1722-1732.

Dr. Greg Vigna, national midurethral sling attorney states, “Unfortunately, the Altis single incision sling data from the Altis 522 study does not show less pain. It showed more pain. The Altis 522 study results revealed that lower extremity pain was reported in 15 out of 184 (8%) patients in the Altis group, and 1 out of 171 patients in the full-length mid-urethral sling group. Despite the Altis sling not entering the leg, it is associated with leg pain.”

NEW YORK, Sept. 12, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- As days get shorter and summer clothes get packed away in favor of back-to-school outfits, American Skin Association (ASA) is reminding people that sun protection never goes out of style.

That's why ASA is honored to sponsor another year of education through the award-winning SPOTS program. SPOTS—Sun Protection Outreach Teaching by Students—is a community educational outreach initiative that targets students from preschool through high school to promote awareness about skin cancer prevention and early detection. 

Stewarded by Drs. Sofia Chaudhry of Saint Louis University and Laurin Council of Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis and led by medical students in more than 60 medical schools nationwide, SPOTS employs innovative methods that include interactive activities, personal narratives, classroom training, and downloadable teaching materials. As part of its program offerings, medical students visit local schools to instruct students about sun-safe habits, skin self-exams, and avoiding artificial tanning beds. The goal is to empower children and teenagers to safeguard themselves against sun exposure.

There is also a particular focus on distinctions in how melanoma and skin cancer present differently on light and dark skin, to help to close a critical gap in societal knowledge.

"Skin cancer doesn't discriminate by time of year or color of skin," Dr. Lynn Cornelius, Chief of the Division of Dermatology at Washington University School of Medicine, said. "As summer ends and the school year begins, we're excited to once again offer our innovative learning programs to schools across the United States, so that students everywhere understand the importance of sun safety and skin health."

The education program began as a collaboration between Saint Louis University and Washington University School of Medicine – both in Saint Louis, Missouri – but has expanded to programs nationwide. ASA and Washington University are now in their sixth year of collaboration on the program.

In May of this year, the SPOTS program received the inaugural 2024 Research Achievement Award in Community Education/Outreach at the 2024 Society for Investigative Dermatology (SID) Annual Meeting.

"Skin damage from the sun during childhood and adolescence can lead to future skin cancers, with one in five Americans developing skin cancer during their lifetime.  This is why it is crucial that we educate our youth on the importance of sun protective habits," said Dr. Chaudhry. NPC is a rare genetic disease that results in progressive neurological symptoms and organ dysfunction. It is caused by changes in either the NPC1 or NPC2 gene, affecting the necessary transport of cholesterol and other lipids within a cell. As a result, these cells do not function as they should, ultimately causing organ damage. On average, individuals affected by this devastating disease only live for about 13 years.

"NPC is a serious disease that leads to enormous adverse impacts on patients and families. Despite extensive research efforts, there have not been approved treatments to meet the significant needs of patients," said Janet Maynard, M.D., M.H.S., director of the Office of Rare Diseases, Pediatrics, Urologic and Reproductive Medicine (ORPURM), in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "The first-ever approval of a safe and effective drug option for NPC will undoubtedly support the essential medical needs of those suffering."

Miplyffa was the first product application to be discussed at the inaugural meeting of the Genetic Metabolic Diseases Advisory Committee (GeMDAC) in August. GeMDAC was established in December 2023 to advise the agency on products used for the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of genetic metabolic diseases.

The safety and effectiveness of Miplyffa were evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 12-month trial in patients two to 19 years of age who had a molecularly confirmed diagnosis of NPC. Fifty patients were randomized 2:1 to treatment with weight-adjusted Miplyffa (31 to 124 mg) or placebo orally three times per day. Among these 50 patients, 39 (78%) received miglustat as background treatment in the trial.

Miplyffa's efficacy was demonstrated by the rescored 4-domain NPC Clinical Severity Scale (R4DNPCCSS) score in the patients who used miglustat as their background treatment. The R4DNPCCSS is a measure of NPC disease progression that looks at four items that patients with NPC, their caregivers and physicians have identified as most relevant including ambulation, speech, swallow and fine motor skills. Higher scores signify a greater severity of the disease. Compared to placebo, Miplyffa resulted in a slower disease progression as measured by the R4DNPCCSS score.

The prescribing information for Miplyffa contains a warning for hypersensitivity reactions including hives and angioedema (swelling under the skin). Individuals experiencing these adverse reactions should stop using the drug. Females who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should not use Miplyffa.

The most common side effects of Miplyffa include upper respiratory tract infection, diarrhea and decreased weight.

Miplyffa, along with miglustat, should be taken orally with or without food according to the recommended dose for the patient's body weight.

The FDA granted Miplyffa priority review, orphan drug, rare pediatric disease, fast track and breakthrough therapy designations for this application.

Over the six-month accelerator, which is designed to advance the startups' commercialization efforts and de-risk their carbontech innovations, the cohort will gain access to the C2V Initiative's Carbontech Leadership Council (CLC). The CLC is an invitation-only group of corporate, nonprofit, and government thought leaders across diverse industry sectors who foster commercialization opportunities and identify avenues for technology validation, testing, and demonstration. Year 4 of the initiative will feature active involvement from all CLC member companies, offering startups exposure to a diverse array of market and business verticals in addition to tailored professional mentorship from some of the industry's leading professionals. FluMist is approved for the prevention of influenza disease caused by influenza virus subtypes A and B in individuals 2 through 49 years of age. Each flu season is different and the health impacts can be substantial and vary widely from season to season, with some flu seasons being worse than others. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu has resulted in about 9.3 million to 41 million illnesses, 100,000 to 710,000 hospitalizations and 4,900 to 51,000 deaths annually between 2010 and 2023. Numerous FDA-approved vaccines are available each flu season to prevent influenza.

FluMist contains a weakened form of live influenza virus strains and is sprayed in the nose. A prescription is still required to receive FluMist. There are now two approved options for receiving FluMist. The vaccine may be administered by a health care provider in a health care setting (including a pharmacy) or it may be administered by the vaccine recipient or a caregiver who is 18 years of age or older.

The most commonly reported side effects of FluMist are fever over 100°F in children 2 through 6 years of age, runny nose and nasal congestion in individuals 2 through 49 years of age and a sore throat in adults 18 through 49 years of age.

For those interested in self- or caregiver-administration, the vaccine manufacturer plans to make the vaccine available through a third-party online pharmacy. Those who choose this option will complete a screening and eligibility assessment when they order FluMist. The third-party pharmacy determines eligibility based on the completed screening and, if it is determined that the intended vaccine recipient is eligible, the pharmacy writes the prescription and ships the vaccine to the address provided by the individual who placed the order. The vaccine can then be administered to the prescribed household member(s) at their convenience. A caregiver should administer FluMist to individuals 2 through 17 years of age, as individuals in this age group should not self-administer the vaccine.

A study was conducted with vaccine recipients and caregivers to evaluate whether the instructions for use were appropriately designed so that recipients and caregivers could safely and effectively use the vaccine.

Vaccine recipients and caregivers who administer FluMist will be sent the vaccine, the Prescribing Information, Information for Patients and their Caregivers and Instructions for Use. The Instructions for Use provides detailed instructions for storage, administration and disposal of FluMist.

The FDA granted this approval of FluMist (Influenza Vaccine Live, Intranasal) to MedImmune LLC.

Angela Mazzi and Megan Mazzocco spoke about how cities can impact mental and physical health, particularly through urban acupuncture—a strategy of making small, targeted interventions that have wide-reaching effects. It might sound like a New York City Fashion Week scene, but it's actually what happens at the Newark School of Fashion and Design, or NSFD, a high school that opened three years ago with a curriculum powered by Parsons School of Design. And now, NSFD and some of its students have been documented in a new reality TV series called "Newark Fashion Forward."

The show is scheduled to premiere at a live screening at the Newark Museum of Art on Monday, September 30^th at 6:00 p.m.

"Newark Fashion Forward" is reminiscent of the famed fashion competition show "Project Runaway." In the series, two NSFD students host the show and present a design challenge to three teams of high school student designers who are ultimately competing for a prize worth more than $10,000. Once the students start working, they draw, plan, cut, stitch, glue, laugh, sweat, and overcome adversity to meet their deadlines.

There are celebrity judges, including the following.

Omneya Elsoufani, who teaches apparel and textile production at the school, guides the students. There are appearances by NSFD Principal Sakina Pitts and Superintendent of Schools Roger León, who announces the winning student designers in the final episode.

The show spanned 75 years of fashion history with works on display by Narciso Rodriguez, Stephen Burrows, Douglas Says, Melody Asherman, the aforementioned Marco Hall, and other iconic designers who are native Newarkers.

The team studied the mineral zircon from two of the oldest pieces of intact crust — dating 4.0 to 2.7 billion years old — and discovered that ancient plate tectonics, or how the continents move around and interact with each other, was likely just as diverse as it is today.

"Plate tectonics makes our planet uniquely dynamic on a solar system scale," said Emily Mixon, the study’s lead author and a researcher at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. "It has been hypothesized that because plate tectonics is important for moving carbon and water around on long time scales, it might be important for how life evolved on Earth."

Moving continents are destructive — crustal rocks are destroyed and recycled. To reveal the ancient processes behind tectonics, the researchers studied zircons, which are physically durable and resistant to chemical alterations.

More specifically, they studied zircons in the 3.9 – 2.7-billion-year-old Saglek-Hebron Complex and 4.0 – 3.4-billion-year-old Acasta Gneiss Complex and found that instead of a linear progression of tectonic styles, from volcanic lavas and magmas pushing down crust into the mantle followed by plates colliding into each other and pushing oceanic crust down to the mantel, many different styles coexisted, just as they do today.

"Understanding how tectonics worked early in Earth history is key for identifying when and how we got the styles of modern tectonics we see today, and how these styles might be expected to look early in planetary development for other possibly habitable planets," Mixon said.

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 12, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Behavioral Health Tech, the leading community focused on expanding access to mental health, substance use, and autism/IDD care through technology, health equity, and innovation, today announced its keynote speaker lineup for its annual conference which will take place at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, AZ, from November 5-7, 2024. The keynote lineup includes Dr. Lisa Damour, Heidi Arthur, and Dr. Hoangmai (Mai) Pham. The conference will highlight innovative thinking, models, and solutions that can increase access to and improve the quality of behavioral health care in the U.S.

• Dr. Lisa Damour, a psychologist and author of three New York bestsellers on teen mental health issues. She has written numerous academic papers, chapters, and books related to education and child development. Dr. Damour serves as the Senior Advisor to the Schubert Center for Child Studies at Case Western Reserve University, is recognized as a thought leader by the American Psychological Association, and works in collaboration with UNICEF. Additionally, Dr. Damour is the co-host of the Ask Lisa podcast and was a consultant to Pixar on the film Inside Out 2.

Dr. Damour graduated with honors from Yale University and worked for the Yale Child Study Center before earning her doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Michigan. She has been a fellow at Yale's Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy and the University of Michigan's Power Foundation.

• Heidi Arthur, the Ad Council's Chief Campaign Development Officer.
